I Just Need to Write
I have a link from my Instagram page to my blog and the link’s title is “New on the Blog.” When you follow that link it takes you to my latest post. Yikes! That was in January. So I’m kickstarting my blog today and committing to writing at least once per week. After all, when it comes to starting new habits, I should practice what I preach. In fact, my post on Instagram yesterday was about exactly that — getting started with one small action step. I was thinking specifically about habits related to health and wellness. Increase your daily steps. Drink more water. Get to bed earlier. But as I stared at that date and realized how many months had gone by I realized that, for me, my actions step is writing for this blog.
I’m calling it out because in truth I write every day. I begin my day with writing. Or more specifically journaling. The spark for what I write often comes from one of the many daily readers I keep by my bedside. As I sip my coffee and eat breakfast, I open these books. Turning to the day’s date, there is almost always a source for both introspection and connecting with the world at large. Sometimes it manifests as a gratitude list. Other times, it might push me to analyze an issue I’m stuck on. Sometimes it can be a slow start but inevitably the pen begins to move across the page.
Writing for myself is easy. I go through journals quickly. I have files on my phone full of poems I’ve composed. Yet, the publication of my writing here on the Internet fills me with fear and anxiety. Well, that ends today. If I want to inspire you to tackle something that you’ve been putting off, then I should start by modeling that myself.
I’ve got files full of articles I’ve written for this website. Content isn’t the problem, it’s behavior. It’s not what I will write but when to make the space in my life for it. Here I go. Day one.
